HDPE vs UHMWPE - when to pay the premium for the heavier-duty polyethylene
Both are food-safe polyethylenes. One outlasts steel. Here's exactly when UHMWPE earns its higher price tag.
HDPE and UHMWPE share the same chemical family but behave very differently in service. The trick is knowing when the cheaper material is fine and when the premium one pays for itself many times over.

The part is mostly static (chemical tanks, cutting boards, marine fender backers, jetty cladding). HDPE is FDA food-safe, easy to weld and roughly half the price of UHMWPE per kilogram.
Buy UHMWPE when…
Abrasion is the failure mode. Mining chutes, coal hoppers, tipper liners, conveyor guide rails and grain silos all eat HDPE in months but run for years on UHMWPE.
Friction matters. UHMWPE has a coefficient of friction half that of HDPE - bulk materials slide off rather than sticking. That alone can eliminate the need for hammering, vibrating or steam-cleaning.
